Russian missiles hit Ukrainian cities; Putin says 'ready for talks'

Russia carried out more than 10 rocket attacks and targeted more than 25 towns in the Kupiansk district of the Kharkiv region on Sunday.

Ukraine's top military command said Russia carried out more than 10 rocket attacks on the Kupiansk district in the Kharkiv region on Sunday, shelling more than 25 cities along the Kupiansk-Lyman frontline and targeting about 20 cities in Zaporizzia, Reuters reported. Putin invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what Moscow is calling a "special operation".  The deadliest European conflict since World War II and the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 led to. Despite Putin's latest offer of talks, there seems to be no end to the 10-month conflict.

"We are ready to negotiate with all those involved about acceptable solutions, but it is up to them - we are not among those who refuse to negotiate," Putin told Rossiya 1 television in an interview broadcast on Sunday. An adviser to Ukrainian President Zelensky said Putin needed to return to reality and accept that it was Russia that did not want talks. Adviser Maikhailo Podolic tweeted: "Russia single-handedly invaded Ukraine and is killing civilians. "Russia does not want talks, but tries to avoid responsibility." Russian attacks on power stations have left millions without power, and Zelensky said Moscow's goal would be to make the last few days of 2022 dark and difficult.

"Russia has lost everything it could this year... I know darkness will not stop us from leading the occupiers to a new defeat. But we have to be prepared for any situation," he said, adding that Ukraine traditionally celebrates January 7, not Christmas on December 25, just like Russia. However, this year some conservative Ukrainians decided to celebrate the holiday on December 25 and Ukrainian officials starting with Zelensky and the Prime Minister of Ukraine wishing Christmas on Sunday. The Kremlin says it will fight until all of its regional goals are achieved, while Kiev says it will not rest until every Russian soldier is expelled from the country.

Asked if geopolitical conflict with the West was reaching dangerous levels, Putin said on Sunday: "I don't think it's that dangerous." Kiev and the West say what Putin has as a royal-style war of occupation makes no sense. A senior Belarusian defence ministry official said on Sunday that the Russian-supplied Iskander strategic missile system, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, and the S-400 air defense system have been deployed in Belarus and they are ready to perform their task.
