In view of the way Corona is wreaking havoc again in China, travel restrictions have been implemented by many countries.
Beijing: The Corona epidemic is once again wreaking havoc in China. As a result, travelers from China are now facing restrictions from more than a dozen countries. Recently, the new country in this list has been Australia, which has made the Covid negative report mandatory for the passengers arriving here. Last month, three years after the coronavirus first emerged in Wuhan city, Beijing suddenly began lifting its "zero Covid policy" of lockdowns and mass testing. Since then, corona cases have increased rapidly in China.
The havoc of Covid can be clearly seen in China hospitals and crematoriums. In recent times, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have also mandated a Covid negative report for travelers from China. Canada cited "limited epidemiological and viral genomic sequence data available" on recent Covid cases in China for a negative Covid report. Meanwhile, Morocco banned all arrivals from China on Saturday. The World Health Organization called the precautionary measures "understandable" in the absence of information on the outbreak provided by Beijing.
The European branch of the International Airports Council - which represents more than 500 airports in 55 European countries - said the sanctions were not appropriate or risk-based. European countries will meet next week to discuss a joint response to the issue, with incoming EU president-holder Sweden saying, "there is a demand for a common policy for the entire EU for the introduction of potential entry restrictions." Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen said on Sunday he was "ready to provide necessary assistance based on humanitarian concerns," but did not say what kind of aid could be given to Beijing.
In his New Year's address broadcast on TV, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered an optimistic address. "The prevention and control of the epidemic is entering a new phase... Everyone is working strongly, and a ray of hope is right in front of us." Despite the surge in infections, shanghai and Wuhan still have large crowds gathered for the pre-New Year evening celebrations. China on Sunday reported more than 5,100 new infections and one Covid-related death from its 1.4 billion population — but the figures do not match the ground reality.
