Russian President Vladimir Putin orders two-day ceasefire in Ukraine

Russia-Ukraine war: Kremlin says in a statement, ceasefire will be in full line of contact between the two sides in Ukraine.

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine on conservative Christmas Eve following a request from Russian spiritual leader Patriarch Kirill.

"In keeping with his holiness's appeal to patriarch Kirill, I direct the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to cease a ceasefire from 12:00 (0900 GMT) on January 6, 2023, to 24:00 (2100 GMT) on January 7, 2023," the Kremlin said in a statement. In Ukraine, there will be a ceasefire on the entire line of contact between the two sides.

According to the Kremlin, orthodox Christmas will be celebrated by the two countries this week. It is the first time Russia has imposed a full ceasefire in Ukraine since it launched attacks in February last year.

"Given the fact that a large number of Orthodox civilians live in war zones, we give them the opportunity to announce a ceasefire from the Ukrainian side and allow them to attend church services on Christmas Eve.

Earlier on Thursday, in a call with the Russian leader, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pressured Putin to declare a "unilateral" ceasefire in Ukraine.
