Water becomes weapon of war between Ukraine and Russia, Russia attacks Soviet-era dam, floods in Ukraine

The war between Russia and Ukraine has caused a dam at the Nova Kakhovka hydropower plant in southern Ukraine to collapse. Both countries have accused each other of the attack. Due to the breaking of the dam, there has been a flood. It is being estimated that heavy losses are being estimated.

Important information related to the case:

  • The Nova Kakhovka Dam is one of the largest dams in Ukraine, currently under the control of Russia. It was completed in 1956. It is 30 meters high, 3.2 kilometers long and spread over 18 square kilometers. It contains about 18 million cubic liters of water. This dam built on the Nipro River is used for hydroelectric power, irrigation and transportation. It also supplies water to the Jeporezia Nuclear Power Plant, so that the nuclear plant can be kept cool.

  • The dam is reported to have broken in the ongoing fighting between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine may have to suffer heavy losses due to the breakdown of the Nova Kakhovka Dam. Large parts of southern Ukraine are at risk of being hit by heavy flooding. There are also reports of water entering many settlements. The water level will reach critical levels in a few hours. People living in these areas are being advised to go to safer places, the work of evacuating people has also been started. At present, about 16000 people have been said to be affected.

  • Ukrainian President Zelensky has called it Russia's "terrorism". We are holding a meeting of the National Security Council. Ukrainian President Zelensky warned last year that an attack on the Nova Kakhovka Dam would be considered a war against the world. On the other hand, Russia has said that Ukraine itself is responsible for this devastation. It has been described as a terrorist action by Ukraine. A Russian official said the bombing damaged only the upper part of the plant, not the dam.

  • Many power plants in Ukraine have been destroyed in the Russian attack, causing electricity problems. The closure of the Nova Kakhovka hydropower project will also increase energy problems, as it provides electricity to about three million people.

  • This dam supplies water to Ukraine's Khersan region as well as crimea. The Khersan region was occupied by Russia during the current war, while Crimea has been occupied since 2014, i.e. the destruction of the dam will also cause damage to russian-controlled territory. Actually, this dam is being used as a weapon of war from the beginning. From the beginning of the war, there was apprehension from Russia that Ukraine could attack it and try to discredit it by putting the responsibility on Russia. In 2022, a bridge connected to this dam was attacked, due to which the bridge broke. Through the video of the attack on the bridge, it was described as an attack from Russia. After the latest attack, the war between Ukraine and Russia is expected to intensify.
