Americans still trust SMS: Americans have less trust in apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, Signal; 1 lakh crore SMS and MMS done in 2020

The world loves WhatsApp, WeChat, Telegram and other apps for text messaging. Smartphone apps like WeChat in China and Line in Japan are popular. But Americans still rely on Short Messaging Service (SMS) started in the 1980s. While apps like WhatsApp are connected via the Internet, SMS works over the phone line.

Its biggest advantage is that it works on almost every phone. The disadvantage is that it has security flaws. It lacks the features of modern apps. SMS trends among Americans suggest that the most convenient technologies are not necessarily the best. It also turns out that the smartphone habits of Americans are unlike those of the rest of the world.

1 lakh crore SMS and MMS in 2020

An analysis by mobile research firm Strategy Analytics shows that one lakh crore private and commercial SMS and MMS were sent in the US in 2020. Nitesh Patel, Director of Wireless Media Research at Strategy Analytics, explains that apart from corporate apps like SMS and WhatsApp, RCS (Rich Communications Services) can be used. It has more features than SMS.

RCS cannot become a universal texting technology

Like SMS, it is a shared technology that is not controlled by a single company. It has been carried forward by Google and has replaced SMS texting on some Android phones. But most likely Apple will never go with RCS. This means that RCS will never be a universal texting technology.

How to pressure WhatsApp on someone who does iMessage

SMS is also more popular among Americans because it is accessible to all types of phones. There you can't ask your friend who uses iMessage to use WhatsApp. Whereas everyone can stay connected with SMS. Why do some Americans also believe that they should promote a big tech company like WhatsApp?
