Drone attack on ship on Indian coast unknown, no casualties reported in the attack.
New Delhi: A merchant ship exploded and caught fire in the Arabian Sea off the Indian coast due to a drone attack. However, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far. According to the news agency ANI, the crew of the ship includes 20 Indians. An Indian Coast Guard merchant ship MV Kem is heading towards Pluto. It is 217 nautical miles off the Porbandar coast.
The vessel carrying crude oil had sailed from a port in Saudi Arabia and was heading towards Mangalore. Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram, which is patrolling the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone, was directed to move towards the distressed merchant ship, defence officials said. The Coast Guard ship has alerted all vessels in the area to render assistance.
According to the ANI report, the fire on the ship has been extinguished but it has affected the functioning of the ship. All crew members are safe.
The Indian Navy had assisted in the evacuation of an injured sailor from the hijacked Malte-flagged cargo ship on Monday. This incident happened a few days later. It was reported that six "pirates" had illegally boarded the ship MV Rouen in the Arabian Sea.
